In the fall of 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the stunning city of Seoul, South Korea. My primary motivation for the trip was to reunite with my high school best friend, who was studying at Seoul National University. 

 

Seoul, to me, was an exquisite blend of old-world charm and cutting-edge modernity. One of the most captivating aspects of the city was its rich history, evident in the ancient temples and palaces like Gyeongbokgung. Walking through these historic sites felt like stepping back in time, as I marveled at the intricate architecture. On the flip side, Seoul's contemporary architecture and bustling streets showcased the city's forward-looking spirit. The combination of traditional and modern was striking, and it spoke to the city's ability to preserve its heritage while continuously pushing boundaries in technology and design.

 

During my visit, I witnessed the breathtaking transformation of the cityscape at night when Seoul's numerous skyscrapers lit up, creating a mesmerizing urban panorama. The Han River, slicing through the city, added an element of serenity amidst the hustle and bustle. It wasn't just about the sights; it was about the people, the culture, and the spirit of a city that beautifully embraced its past while hurtling into the future. My visit to Seoul was a memorable experience that left me with a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of this remarkable city.

1. What’s the difference between big cities and small cities? Why?

The difference is vast and multifaceted, but one of the key distinctions often lies in the atmosphere. In big cities, such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, the atmosphere is typically fast-paced, bustling, and dynamic. The streets are crowded, and there is a constant energy in the air even in the night time. On the other hand, small cities tend to have a more relaxed and slower-paced atmosphere. 

 

2. Do you like historical cities? Why?

Definitely, those cities are like time capsules that allow us to explore the architecture, culture, and stories of bygone eras. I enjoy visiting them because walking through ancient streets and monuments, I feel a profound connection to the people who once lived there and the events that shaped their lives. It's a fascinating way to learn about history in a tangible and immersive manner. 

 

3. How to protect historical cities? Why?

Protecting historical cities requires a collective effort. Governments must implement policies that restrict modern development and ensure the preservation of historical sites. They should also provide funding for restoration and maintenance. Individuals can contribute by following preservation guidelines, and raising awareness about their significance.

 

4. Do you think old buildings should be broken down, and give places for modern buildings?

From my perspective, they should not be demolished if they possess historical or cultural value. Preserving such buildings not only maintains a connection to our past and heritage but it also benefits the nation’s tourism industry. Conversely, if a building lacks historical or architectural value and hinders modern development, demolition may be considered.
