Bài mẫu IELTS Speaking Part 2: “Describe a period of time that changed your life"

You should say

When it was

Who you were with

What happened at that time

And explain why it changed your life

During my college years, I had the opportunity to join a volunteer group alongside one of my friends, and it was a life-changing experience. This took place when I was in my early twenties.

My friend and I decided to volunteer our time and efforts to help remote and underprivileged children in the Northern part of Vietnam. We spent several months working with a local nonprofit organization that focused on education and social development for these children.

The experience changed my life in several ways. First, this experience exposed me to the harsh realities that children in remote areas confront, such as the severe lack of access to education and basic necessities. In some cases, we encountered villages without teachers or proper schools, and, at times, we helped build and repair schools, then visit the children's homes to encourage parents to let their kids attend school. Witnessing kids’ resilience and determination despite their challenging circumstances inspired me to become more compassionate and empathetic.

Secondly, the experience allowed me to develop valuable life skills, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and effective communication. These skills have proven to be invaluable in both my personal and professional life.

Finally, it instilled in me a strong sense of social responsibility and a desire to continue contributing to the betterment of society. I realized that even small actions can make a significant impact on the lives of others. So I think that is the reason why this period was a transformative time that significantly shaped my values.

Follow up questions:

- Did you tell anyone about this?

Yes. I shared this incredible volunteering experience with only a few close people in my life. It felt deeply personal, and I wanted to share it with those who truly understood and appreciated the journey I was on.

- Do you like to change?

Yes, I genuinely embrace it. Change brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. It keeps life interesting and pushes me out of my comfort zone, which I believe is essential for personal development. Embracing change has allowed me to adapt, learn, and become a better version of myself.

  1. Do children like to change schools when they are young?

No, in my experience, children usually have a group of friends who have been attending the same school for years, and they are quite attached to their school, teachers, and classmates. They feel a sense of belonging and familiarity that makes them reluctant to switch to another school. However, if a child is facing a difficult situation at their current school, such as bullying or a hostile environment, they might be more inclined to change schools in search of a safer and more supportive educational setting.

  1. The impact of changing schools at an early age on children (positive/ negative)

In most situations, the process of changing schools can lead to a disruption in a child's learning. Adapting to a new curriculum and catching up with the educational material can be challenging, affecting their academic progress. Moreover, introverted children may experience higher levels of stress and anxiety when encountered in these situations. Conversely, if a child is naturally sociable and outgoing, they tend to be more adaptable to new environments and find it easier to make new friends.

  1. What children will learn in their new school?

It’s a tough question, but I assume it depends on the type of school they transition to. In Vietnam, for instance, public schools typically emphasize academic subjects, with a strong focus on traditional education. On the other hand, private schools often prioritize a more holistic approach to education offering a range of life skills and extracurricular activities like art, sports, leadership skills, and personal development programs.

  1. Do children like changes?

Perhaps, yes, their youthful curiosity drives them to explore new experiences and challenges. Change often brings excitement and opportunities to learn more about the surrounding world.

  1. How do people face big changes and what preparations do they make?

People's responses to significant changes are diverse, with some welcoming them and others resisting. Typically, individuals prepare for unforeseen circumstances, often involving financial readiness. For instance, many maintain emergency funds or insurance to mitigate unexpected challenges. However, some people just go with the flow without any preparation at all.

  1. Do you like new things or changes in life?

As I mentioned earlier, I'm all for new things and changes in life. They're like spices that add flavor to the everyday. Embracing change keeps things fresh and exciting. It's about discovering new aspects of life and myself, whether it's trying out a new hobby, traveling to a new place, or just changing up my routine.

  1. When things like getting married or moving home happen, what kinds of things would you consider?

When it comes to big life events like getting married or moving home, there's so much to consider! One of the main things is the change in lifestyle. It's like stepping into a new world where your daily routines, priorities, and even your living space might undergo a complete transformation. Whether it's adapting to living with a partner, managing a household, or just getting used to a new neighborhood, these events require a readiness to embrace and adapt to changes.
