Writing Task 2 - 26/09/2023 - BC Nguyễn Đình Chiểu: Some people think hosting a major international sport event brings a lot of advantages. But some people think it only has disadvantages. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sport competitions continue to be a controversial topic around the world. While some argue that these events bring numerous benefits, others assert that they come with more drawbacks than merits. There are valid views on both sides, which I will consider now.

In terms of economic advantages, the host country will welcome an influx of several thousand tourists, leading to increased revenue in sectors related to tourism, including hotels, restaurants, and merchandise vendors. Furthermore, it can provide an excellent opportunity for that nation to enhance its global visibility and promote its unique culture and attractions. This was clearly observed during the 2003 SEA Games, Vietnam saw a significant surge in its tourism industry, resulting in a remarkable boost in overall economic development and our image of the country in the region.

On the other hand, there are several reasons why people think that international sport competition only brings negative impacts. Security remains one of the prominent concerns for countless individuals who participate in or attend sporting events. The potential for threats ranging from hooliganism which is due to the rivalries between teams to terrorism. Notably, incidents like the bombings during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2013 Boston Marathon emphasize the elevated security risks associated with large-scale gatherings due to the significant crowd sizes they attract.

In conclusion, it is partly true that hosting international sport competitions may bring some demerits in some cases. However, I firmly support the view that these events can lead to long-term economic benefits and partnerships, extending beyond the duration of the sporting event itself.
